Description

Students interested in learning the craft of sailmaking can elect to sign up for this supplemental evening course. Like woodworking, sailmaking is a trade rooted in the traditions of handwork. Although the modern sail loft utilizes capital intensive tools, all sailmakers must first understand and have learned the fundamental hand skills. In this program, you will gain sailmaking skills by first working on practice pieces, and then moving on to construct actual sails. You will learn how to measure the rig and how to work from the designer's plans. You will learn how to design the shape of the sail for aerodynamic efficiency, and will then layout, cut and sew the sails using machines and handwork. You will learn how to construct both traditional and modern sails and will cover a wide variety of materials and practices.
