Vessel description

Designed by Carl Chamberlin of Port Townsend and commissioned by Capt. Peter Wilcox and Bridget Bayer of Portland Oregon the Wilcox 36 is designed for comfortable cruising on the Columbia River up to the BC “Mainland,” the Charlottes and the “inside passage” to Alaska.

“Our intent is to make this an extraordinarily water friendly vessel through the use of an efficient displacement hull using B100 biodiesel with sail assist” notes Capt. Wilcox whose affiliation with SCOW, Skippers for Clean OR & WA Waters adds inertia to the project.

SCOW is an ad hoc coalition of skippers – licensed and not – who take their responsibility to lead in the safeguarding of our local waters seriously. SCOW (now SCOW~) played a key role in educating the Oregon legislature on environmental boating issues and came close to getting a significant environmental-economic development propulsion-related bill passed in the Oregon legislature after three, gradually more well organized lobbying efforts.

This 70 – 30 motor sailor will be light enough to be easily driven and strong enough to make the passage from the Columbia River to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. She will have a light rig for steadying and sailing off the wind. Power will be in the 50hp range to provide cruising at hull speed with good reserve.

Accommodations include a master stateroom forward with room for two guests and head with shower amidships. Galley, dinette and inside helm will be in the pilothouse.

The Wilcox 36 was launched in Port Townsend on January 19, 2008 and was named Ama Natura.
