Our New Boat Shop/Education Center
What is the Heritage Campus Campaign?
In 1998, the Boat School received a charitable remainder annunity trust that enabled us to start Phase I of the Heritage Campus Campaign. This phase, which cost $1.1 million, resulted in the purchase of six acres of waterfront and upland property, a pier, and two historical buildings on the Port Hadlock shoreline. The School relocated to the new campus in 2004.
We are continuing the Campaign with Phase II, which will focus on construction of a new 6, 300 square foot Workshop/Education Building on the upland part of the property. The new building will replace a temporary enclosure that has been in use since 2005 and will enable the School to increase enrollment from 45 to 60 students per year. The new structure will allow more and larger boats to be under construction simultaneously, will provide better working conditions for students and instructors, and will allow us to offer a greater variety of programs.
This new building has been carefully designed to be cost efficient and "no frills." It will be built with green techniques as much as possible while keeping economic constraints and construction and operating efficiencies in mind.
Why We Need Your Support
We have received $300,000 in pledges to date, bringing us more than half way to the total projected cost of $539,000. We need to raise the additional $239,000 by January 1, 2011, in order to accept the committed funds.
What the Project Means to the Local Community
Ninety percent of our students come from outsied the Olympic Peninsula. They must find housing and purchase goods and services thus generating over $2 million annually in support of local businesses. Many graduates remain in the area and provide skilled help for local businesses.
The School provides alternative vocational training opportunities for local high school graduates who may not be college bound. It also provides skills training to local tradespeople and supports the local workforce.
Please be as generous as possible. Help support this project that will positively impact our community, our students and the Boat School. We need you help!
